BAP054 – How to Support ELs Who May Fail

This episode has a healthy dose of inspiring message but there are absolutely concrete ideas and a call to action for each of us.

You can listen in your favorite podcast app or right here.

If you are interested in supporting students who may not meet (or did not meet) standardized assessments or grade level requirements, you’ll may want to check out this post on the Seidlitz blog.  That blogpost outlines the specific things I recommend for supporting ELs who may not meet requirements at the same time as their peers.

In addition to that blog post, you may be interested in some shows we did this time last year on this subject.

Episode 32: Part III Keep Moving Forward (guest Talisa Harris)

Episode 31: Part II Keep Moving Forward (guest Emily Francis)

Episode 30: Part I Keep Moving Forward (guest Emily Francis)

In Episode 54 I promise you some links.  The first is  The United Way helpline. The helpline is there for families who need support. Yes, they can connect your students with programs to help them get a GED…

But knowing about a GED is only an FYI for our students who have not yet aged out.

They should stay with us to learn more academics and more English for as long as they are able to take advantage of our schools.

I also mention Techfugees.  They are supporting refugees around the world in many different ways. If you are in a place that supports refugees but they can’t take advantage of public education, please reach out so we can think take with our PLN.  There are services we can all learn more about and Techfugees is a great example.

I also mention this padlet with success stories of SLIFE, SIFE and Immigrants who overcame challenges.  Stories like that of Emily Francis, Francisco Jimenez, Valentina Gonzales and others are here to share with your students.  You can share a story now and use these resources in your curriculum next year:

To support ELs moving forward, let’s all make sure we take advantage of this amazing PD opportunity that comes up every June.  VirtuEL is available to everyone! You can watch previous years’ sessions in replay but we’d love for you to join us live.  All the information is at bit.ly/VirtuEL.  #VirtuEL19 is going to be EPIC!

Thank you for listening and for all you’re doing for English learners.  Some of our students come with such challenges that we may feel that there is no hope.  That is never the case.  With your help, they CAN have hope and that is what we all need to keep moving forward.

HUGS!

Carol

The SIOP Chat and VirtuEL19 – Free PD in Your Pocket

Have to thank Richard McCabe of Carolina TESOL for “PD in your Pocket.” At least I believe he coined the phrase.

Well, he is spot on! You don’t have to be a “Twitter Person” to grab some great learning this week from your phone or any device.  Just hop over there and follow the #ELLchat_BkClub hashtag to see what kind of insight is being shared on these questions this week.

We are doing a deep dive into the 5th edition of Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners, The SIOP Model.  You don’t necessarily need to have the book as you will see if you follow the threads.  These questions are important for most classrooms.  As always, I’m super grateful to Dr. Katie Toppel and Tan Huynh who created this slow chat.  The SIOP leads and everyone participating are really adding to my learning this week. I hope you’ll come check it out.

I’m honored to be leading this last week of the slow chat. (that is a chat with questions that lasts over several days in this case).  We are collaborating around SIOP Component #8, Review & Assessment through May 18 so you still have plenty of time to check it out.  Lurking without commenting is totally ok. But we’d love to have your voice! Just include the #Ellchat_BkClub hashtag if you comment so it will show up in the thread.

WEEK 8 Questions/Frames:

8Q1. The difference between evaluation and assessment is…

8Q2. The difference between formal and informal assessment is…

8Q3.  An example of informal assessment is…   This information is important because…

8Q4. One way for ELs to review newly learned vocabulary is…

8Q5.  A challenge faced by teachers when assessing English learners is……

So please do join us or just check it out!

BAP053 CI and Strategies with SIOP Leaders

You didn’t miss the video chat with Tan Huynh, Katie Toppel, Emily Francis, Carlota Holder, Jess Bell and Allyson Newton.  I have the audio for you right here.

In this show, we get to hear audio from one of the #ELLCHAT_Bkclub YouTube hangouts!

Want to read more about the book chat?  Check out this blogspot page created by one of the founders, Dr. Katie Toppel.  We all owe a debt of gratitude to Tan Huyhn and Katie for creating the book club!

Our study of Making Content Comprehensible is still going strong and this video hangout was over Comprehensible Input and Strategies. Here is the slide deck they are using in the chat if you’d like to see the slides they are referencing.  You can also watch the full-length video version of their conversation.  That video is embedded here.

This dream team of EL leaders took questions from our PLN and answered them on air.

They also took on some great topics like videotaping yourself, creating a culture for teachers to want to use video and being vulnerable in order to grow.

Emily Francis mentioned a video I have on my blog where I failed to engage all my learners and one of my students fell asleep.  Here is that video.

I am actually pretty proud of it.  It was a real moment of growth for me in many ways.  I didn’t run from this or try to hide it.  I used the experience to work with my students to make that lesson more meaningful and also shared the win with other teachers.  What the group says in their conversation is correct. Using video in your classroom can be a powerful tool in many ways.

In the beginning of this show, I introduce the speakers and I also talk about MADPD.  Shout out to everyone who participated this year.  Our ESL PLN turned out in a big way. I’m so proud of everyone and happy for the English learners out there that will benefit from our collective expertise.  What??  You say you didn’t get to see MADPD?  No worries!  All the videos are right here.  This is the master schedule so you can still scroll through all the PD sessions and watch the ones that interest you.

One more bit of PD in your PJs!  VirtuEL19 is coming up on June 15.  Mark your calendar.  Dr. Andrea Honisfeld and Dr. Maria Dove will be the keynote speakers and we have an amazing line up of presenters.

Check out the line up at this website and don’t miss the mid-conference commentary by me, Larry Ferlazzo, Valentina Gonzalez and Steve Sofronas.  Just like the SIOP hangout, and MADPD, this will be another opportunity for you to interact with your PLN as they present or watch these PD sessions together.

THANK YOU

Thank you to the #ELLchat_BkCLub leaders!  Thanks to MADPD presenters.  And Thanks to VirtuEL presenters.Thank you to everyone who is out there sharing content for the sake of English Learners.

And THANK YOU TO YOU for listening to this show or reading through the post.  I continue to be inspired by what you are taking advantage of, your interest in self-directed PD and how you are reflecting!
